Dendrobium officinale has a long history of being consumed as a functional food and medicinal herb for preventing and managing diseases. The phytochemical studies revealed that Dendrobium officinale contained abundant bioactive compounds, such as bibenzyls, polysaccharides, flavonoids, and alkaloids. It is a deciduous plant that drops its leaves in the fall and flowers in winter-spring. All the leaves can fall off during or before flowering. Grow in cool to warm temps. These plants require cooler temps to flower, with nights in the upper 50s to low 60s. Day temps can be from 65 to 75 in winter and up to 10 degrees warmer in summer. The green/ yellow flowers are variable. And have red to purple markings on the lip. The plant is smaller growing and has canes about 6-9 inches tall at most. A compact, deciduous orchid. Its pseudobulbs are short and thick, often curved or misshapen, and grow about 1 ft long. When leaves drop, the stem is covered with white leaf bases.
